Nigel update: Doing Twitter/Facebook update
Posted by Justin on Dec 31, 2010, Categories: Uncategorized
So it's the day of new years eve, but that doesn't stop us from doing a little work on Nigel today.
We created twitter and facebook updater commands using Python. In Dragon Dictate we use the same Applescript as we did for our Movie Listing post - just changing up what Nigel actually says and the dialog box.
Code is after the jump.

It’s kind of a holiday week
Posted by Justin on Dec 29, 2010, Categories: Uncategorized
So you can see that I haven't posted that much this week. That's because in my mind it's kind of a holiday week. While this isn't technically a holiday, I have been spending my time doing holiday-like things (cleaning up the office mostly, playing on facebook, etc). A quick rundown of pre-CES stuff: Verizon will not be showing an iPhone - but a android based 4G LTE device....but since everyone is expecting a VZ iPhone after the new years, lets just keep that one under wraps Apple will announce a CDMA based iPad - so Verizon might get the...

Posted by Justin on Dec 21, 2010, Categories: Apple Stuff
So I have worked on a new joke script today for my DLA (Digital Life Assistant) Nigel. I'm a mushroom (you know a fun-gi!) HA! Nigel will say one of 5 jokes, including a knock-knock.
Ok so here's my script for you kiddies today:

MacSpeech Dictate + Applescript
Posted by Justin on Dec 19, 2010, Categories: Apple Stuff
The built in speech recognition software that comes with Mac OS X is garbage! Ok it's not that bad, but in comparison to MacSpeech Dictate it is. The birthday script was just one of many that I've been putting together to have my computer, now called Nigel thanks to my wife, be more interactive. While this is no where near artificial intelligence, it just feels like it. MacSpeech Dictate allows you to turn off the dictation mode and only work in "command" mode. This means it won't try to type the words it hears, it will...

Update to my Birthday announcment Applescript
Posted by Justin on Dec 19, 2010, Categories: Apple Stuff
So I thought I was like this awesome programmer, having figured out Applescript having never touched it before to come up with this great script that let's me know when birthdays are coming up. I worked on it for hours and what ended up happening? I forgot to program in if it was NO ONE's birthday!!! So here is my updated code:
set d to (current date)
set theDayNum to (day of d) as string
set theMonth to (month of d) as string
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/icalBuddy -nc -ic Birthdays eventsToday+7"
set bdays to result as text
if bdays is not ""...

I made Applescript my B!4çH today!
Posted by Justin on Dec 17, 2010, Categories: Apple Stuff
Anyone who knows me knows I don't program, but I have been on this weird Applescript kick lately. I have put together this "wake-up" script that when I tell my computer to run it it spits out a welcome message, my calendar events for the day, the weather, any new mail I have, starts my music and opens up some of my daily websites. There was one piece that I couldn't find online at all so I felt like I needed to write it. This code will go into your iCal and tell you when someones birthday is coming...
