So most people in the Apple world today were shocked when Apple release information saying that as of January 31, 2011 the Xserve will no longer be purchased for sale. Apple has released a PDF explaining how you can transition from the Xserve to the new MacPro Server product (which showed up on the Apple store site this AM) or the Mac Mini Server.
In the PDF they specifically say the Mac Mini server is designed for offices less than 50 people who only need to run 1 particular service (such as File Sharing, DNS, or Mail) heavily or 2-3 lighter services. Anything over that you need to get the MacPro with Snow Leopard Server. The new MacPro Server now has 8GB of RAM and two 1TB HD’s but lacks some of the features of the Xserve such as the dual power supplies and the Lights Out Management (the ability to turn the unit on if it’s off physically) and is much larger than the Xserve.
Here at the MacTech Conference the room was buzzing with the news and one great thing that was mentioned was when Jobs announced OS X 10.7 Lion the other week, there was no mention of OS X 10.7 Lion Server.
While this is very troubling for some IT consultants, many people will not be heavily affected by this.
