Can your iPod Touch be an iPhone?

It can – but only with the new magic case that Apple just patented. Apple applied for a accessory transceiver. Essentially it’s a case that has a SIM card in it that allows for voice and data to travel over a cell network.

Apple’s patent doesn’t seem to be aiming at adding voice to the iPod touch, but more towards allow the iPhone to use a CDMA network (for those keeping score that’s Verizon and Sprint).

It seems like a lot for Apple to be actually coming up with this device, but knowing Apple it’s probably a “tech-blocker”. They apply for the patent, but never release the device essentially to keep anyone else from designing it. Good job Apple!
